Does it ever feel like you’ve got some gremlin alter ego character lurking deep inside you just waiting for the perfect moment to come out and sabotage you the minute you start talking about your business?
Its favorite time to make its appearance is the second you open your mouth as you are about to give your elevator pitch in front of a room full of strangers. Sound familiar?
It’s funny, the gremlin never shows up when practicing in the bathroom mirror or in the car or in the shower.
Oh no…it has to wait until it has an audience. It has to wait when it can sabotage your desire to have “Presence” – those times when you want to look and sound your best.
That’s when it seems to come alive and upstages you robbing you of your thoughts and your perfectly scripted words. It even takes over your voice. The sound coming out of your mouth isn’t you. It’s an octave higher and flutters all over the place. There is a constriction in your throat as you struggle to force air out to form the words until it’s too late and you realize that you’ve forgotten to breath. The second your bottom hits the chair you can’t remember a thing. It’s all a blur. The gremlin got the best of you. AGAIN!
Yes, that nasty, pesky, annoying, and at times debilitating gremlin that shows up with one sole purpose – to keep you small, invisible and safe from the cruel world. If the gremlin had its way you would never open your mouth and talk about yourself and your business in public ever again.
So what’s your gremlin’s name?
For most of us the first and middle names are the same – Fear Of.
The last name varies.
Some of the more popular names are “Fear of Rejection” and “Fear of Failure.” Then there’s always “Fear of Humiliation.” And last but not least is “Fear of Judgment.”
There are many nicknames too, derivatives if you will, such as “Fear of Making a Mistake” and Fear of Looking Foolish or Stupid or Incompetent.”
All the names have a certain ring to them of familiarity.
Why? Because they are all part of the human experience and are universally felt by each of us as a member of the human family.
How do you fight these gremlins if they are so universally prevalent? They seem to be all powerful and have control over our emotions and even dictate our behavior.
You fight them by calling them out, that’s how. You learn their name and shine the light right in their face. But you do this when you can call the shots. When you have control over the environment. When you are in charge and have support.
And how do you accomplish this? One of the simplest and effective ways to fight these gremlins and to take away their power is by using EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique, or simply known as “tapping.” Tapping is a powerful energy releasing tool that helps you bring negative emotions to the surface so you can sever the power they have over you.
Maybe it’s time you shine the light on your gremlins and stop letting them get the best of you!
