In my last blog, “That’s My Story and I’m Sticking To It” I talked about how people have patterns of behaviors and experiences in life that are hard to let go of. You can read that blog here if you missed it.
I talked about a four step process and thought I would take each step one by one.
The first step in letting go of your story is to stop focusing on the past. Yes, I know, easier said than done. But it’s important to realize that where we focus our thoughts and energy determines the direction we take our life.
If you are constantly reminding yourself about past failures, talking about how others hurt you when you were younger, thinking about unpleasant memories and allowing your feelings to trigger you to repeat unproductive behaviors then you are going to remain mentally and emotionally stuck. And that means your physical life will follow suit.
Become aware when you are venturing into the past with your thoughts. Catch those thought early on and gently remind yourself not to go there. Think thoughts of the present moment and what is right about where you are right now. Every day we can find something, even if it’s small, to be appreciative of and focus on that. It could be as simple as appreciating the cool air coming into your window as you wake up. Gratitude is a very powerful healing emotion.
People that live in the past remain in the past. They conjure up similar experiences because that is where their focus is. We get out of life what we put into it. So put into your thoughts anything that is positive, uplifting and forward thinking.
There is a whole other world going on in our subconscious that I would be remiss if I didn’t mention. Hidden beliefs and trapped emotional baggage can pull us into the past without us even being aware that we’re doing it. That’s where emotional releasing techniques such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique – aka “tapping”) can help a great deal. Not sure what tapping is. Check out my blog about it here. You can also find lots of information on the internet about tapping, especially on Youtube. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need some assistance in getting started with tapping.
So as soon as you find your thoughts drifting into the past or with thoughts and feelings that are unpleasant stop them in their tracks with tapping and start having a conversation with your inner being – your subconscious. Give it permission to let go of the limiting beliefs you’ve been holding on to and those emotional memories that trigger your thoughts to go into the past.
I’m sure you’ll find tapping an extremely helpful tool to help you stay in the present moment and focused on all the positive aspects you have in your life right now. Sometimes you’ll have an immediate “ah ha” moment and feel better and lighter after doing some tapping and sometimes it is a process that you have to give time. The important thing is to be consistent. Tapping works if you give it a chance.
Stay tuned next time for step two of how to let go of your story…
